You are in a different situation than in your normal life, so you have to watch different things. In this article you will find various tips and tricks to bring your survival trip to a good end. Discover our survival guide!
Make a good shelter
In most survival guides they say it is very important to make a good shelter. In that way you can protect yourself from different dangers, like cold or heat. Mostly you have to seek warmth to survive. In that case you want to find a small rock overhang or create a space for yourself where you can accommodate your body lying down. This will make sure you get enough body heat. It is also necessary to make a framework. For this you have to use tree limbs and branches and be a bit creative. Between them, you will stick stocks to block the wind and fill the gaps. Cover the whole with thick materials, like leaves or moss. It is also very important to stay cool enough if you are survivalling in the wilderness. Dehydration and heat exhaustion are also dangerous. Sometimes you can arrive in hotter terrain where it is best to find shade to stay cool. You can also create a shelter in the same way to create shadow. Use leaves, bark of clothes to cover one side of your shelter so you can lay in the shadow. If you are on hotter terrain, you can also dig a few inches into the soil to uncover cooler ground. This ground you can lay in to rest and give yourself a cool down.
Make a fire
When you want to cook or get warm, you have to start a fire. This you can do by collecting dry sticks and a tinder bundle of leaves, pine needles or other dried foliage. When you start making a fire, it is best to begin small. You can add larger dried leaves of dried foliage later when the fire is already going and is already at a hot temperature. Strike your lighter or match and keep them from the moisture. It is important to keep your lighter or matches in a case which is watertight. Put this in your backpack. You can also use a magnesium fire starter. With a knife you shave off filings into the tinder to ignite them with a spark. This you create by hitting the back of your knife. Did you know you can also use batteries? If you use a removed car battery and attach wires of steel wool, you can create a spark in the wool. If you connect the posts with steel wool, you soon make a spark and can start a fire. Practise each method so you know how to make a fire with different tools. There are different survival guides to find where you can read more about making a fire.
Count your resources
When you are survivalling in the woods for the first time and reading survival guides, you know it is important to take inventory of your resources. This helps you to make a strategy and plan for survival. You should at least have some of the most important essentials, like a compass and headlamp. Also you need some provisions like fruit bars to help you on your way. If you know exactly what you have, it can help you determine what you need and what helps for survival. Also you can ration food and water. You always first look for shelter, warmth and water. It’s up to you what you need the most at the moment, but we recommend you to start with finding water. Water is very important for survival. Where water is is also the place where you best can create a shelter and a fire. This way you have everything around and can more easily help yourself survive in the woods.
Go for a water source
Finding clean water is very important if you want to survive in the woods. This is one of the most important things you will read in survival guides. Especially in the wilderness it can be very difficult to find clean water or decontaminate it by yourself. If you have a map, we recommend you to look for rivers and streams on the map. If you find water in streams, puddles and rivers, you have to declare it from pathogens. You do this by boiling the water for one minute. Is it raining? Good! In that case we recommend you collect the rainwater. If you have an open container you can easily collect rainwater. If you do not have this, you can also collect rainwater in other ways. You can use clothing and leaves to soak up the rainwater and squeeze it. Are you survivalling in winter? Then it is possible to melt snow. You can do this easily over a fire. It is also possible to put snow in a water bottle. You can use your body heat as direct sunlight to make it melt. Make sure it is fully melted, because your body will waste more energy if you drink cold snow.
Catch food by making a spear
Also food is very important for survival. Once you don’t have any more provisions, what is the best option? You can catch food by making a spear. A spear is one of the most popular hunting tools available. With a spear you can easily catch small game of fish. If you want to make a spear, you’ll first need to find a very long stick. The stick needs to be very straight. The next thing you do is spitting the end of the stick to make two tines. Think about a fork. Wedge it with a small rock. With wine you can lash the piece into place. Sharpen the spear with a rock, to make it an effective hunting tool.
Learn basic knots
When you are going to survive in the woods, different survival guides tell you that it is also necessary to learn the basic knots. If you are good at knot tying the survival will go much better. There are a lot of different survival knots, but we will explain the most important knots to you. One of the most important knots is the bowline knot. This is a very useful tool if you want to make a loop along a rope where you can attach items to. It is a knot which tightens as it's pulled, so it becomes a much stronger grip. The bowline knot can be very useful in different rescue situations. It can also serve as a seat or used to wrap around torso’s. If you want to keep provisions away from animals in trees, you can also use this knot. Another famous knot is the double half inch knot. This knot can attach a rope to the desired object. It is possible to make an A-frame shelter by tying half hitches around two opposite tree trunks.
Don’t forget this ones
If you are going to survive, there are also other very important tools you must not forget. Think about tools like:
- A multi tool knife. We highly recommend having a multi tool knife, because you never know when you need it. You can use it to shave wood or sharpen a spear. You can also use it for making a fish ready, cutting a rope or for different other tasks.
- GPS and map. Maybe chances are big that you have your phone with you, but when your battery dies, you don’t have anything. So we highly recommend that you also buy a compass or GPS communicator. It will help you find where you have to walk if your cell phone doesn’t work anymore.
- A good shelter: make sure to carry a rope and tarp so you can easily create a shelter for emergencies. What you also can do, is buy a thermal.
- Fire starter: a fire starter is a must have in your backpack. Put lighters and matches, but also magnesium fire starters in your backpack, so you can always start a fire with different tools.
- Headlamp: we can also recommend you to wear a headlamp. It helps you to find the way in the dark or make an emergency signal if you are in need of help. It is an absolute must have if you go for a hike.
Don’t forget these tools when you go for survival, because chances are high survival will be more difficult without it.
